George Vanderkuur

   

 

George has taught science and mathematics in elementary and secondary classrooms. In addition to his work in the classroom he was Headmaster of Holy Trinity School and Science and Mathematics Curriculum Consultant for the Toronto District School Board. Beyond the school walls his career in science education included program and exhibit development at the Ontario Science Centre where he held the positions of Education officer, Chief Scientist and Associate Director. He was also Administrator of Evaluation with the Premier's Council Technology Fund and President of the Royal Canadian Institute for the Advancement of Science.

Well known for innovations in hands-on learning and Physics workshops for teachers, George was active as a curriculum developer, text book writer and teacher educator nationally and internationally. He was education consultant for 60 children's television programs for Disney and Nelvana and was an invited speaker at the United Nations Conference on Tourism and the environment.

Since “retiring” in 1998 George has been principal of Durham Secondary Academy. In 2002 He received the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal and in 2010 became a member of the Old Brigade of the Royal Military College. Since 2005 he has made two transcontinental bicycle trips crossing both Canada and the USA.
