President: Shawn Brooks

Shawn has taught physics for many years and has also worked for a software company. He has presented at STAO (Science Teacher's Association of Ontario) conferences, and has conducted workshops for physics teachers on behalf of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical physics. He is the former treasurer of the Ontario Association of Physics Teachers and currently sits on their steering committee. In conjunction with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education he has participated in and co-designed research projects pertaining to technology enhanced student learning. He cares about science education and critical thinking.

Vice-President Outreach and Policy: Dave Doucette

Dave Doucette is a recently retired Lead Physics Teacher and Head of Science at Richmond Hill High School. Dave taught for ten years in Scarborough (Agincourt CI and Cedarbrae CI) before heading 'north'. Dave is a cognitive psychologist who became a 'born-again physicist' with a keen interest in Physics Education Research and Bridging Research into Classroom Practice. Dave Doucette is currently working for Let’s Talk Science as an Education Consultant.

Vice-President Teaching and Learning: Chris Meyer

Chris Meyer completed a Specialist Degree in Physics at the University of Toronto, but didn’t really get this physics stuff until he began teaching. From his experiences “teaching” physics at A. Y. Jackson (North York), the Ontario Science Centre, Rosedale Heights (Toronto) and now York Mills C. I. (North York) he came to realize that the teaching techniques he was raised with were not adequate. After attending a lecture by Edward Redish at the University of Toronto, and becoming acquainted for the first time with Physics Education Research, things began to change. Now Chris gives presentations across southern Ontario encouraging teachers to stop teaching.

Past President: Lisa Lim-Cole

Lisa Lim-Cole has been teaching physics since September 2000. She has recently accepted a position as the Science and Technology Program Facilitator for Durham District School Board. She obtained her physics degree from McGill University and completed her Bachelor of Education degree at Queen’s University. Lisa is also the Eastern Ontario Teacher Network Coordinator for The Perimeter Institute’s Outreach Program, which works to provide workshops for physics teachers. Lisa is a passionate science educator who is inspired by the people she works with and the students she encounters. Let's foster curiosity!

Membership Chair: James Ball

James has been teaching physics and science for the past 22 years. He focuses physics lessons for his students on real world applications. Every year, James’ physics teaching style evolves as the result of implementing physics education research. He continues to focus is on having the students learn through active participation rather than listening to lectures. James is a dynamic physics educator who continues to inspire both his students and other physics teachers

Secretary: Olga Michalopoulos

Mrs. Olga Michalopoulos teaches at Georgetown District High School where her creative approaches in engaging all students in the study of science in general and physics in particular. Her dynamism motivates all students to become involved in science well beyond the classroom, be it in solar car competitions, Grade 11 and Grade 12 physics contests, or a pilot project with the Canadian Space Agency that allowed students to engage via video conference with the Canadian Space Agency to learn about the physics and engineering of space flight. Olga is always at the creative edge of pedagogy, and is a genuine motivator of students in physics. In 2012 she received the 2012 CAP Award for Excellence in Teaching High School/CEGEP Physics (Ontario).

Treasurer: Ryan Thompson

Teacher at Newmarket High in Newmarket for 8 years. Have two small kids and I love physics and learning about it. As I teach it, I learn it. I am like an addict and I don't want to stop.

AAPT Section Representative: Dr. Tetyana Antimirova

Dr. Tetyana Antimirova is an Assistant Professor and a current Assistant Chair for Undergraduate Studies at the Department of Physics at Ryerson University. Her current interests include Physics Education Research, Curriculum Development, Science Education and Outreach. Her current work is focused on the impact of technology (clickers, real-time data acquisition and analysis, video-based motion analysis, computer simulations, etc. the implementation of video-based motion analysis in large introductory physics courses. She also studies the impact of high school physics experience on the learning outcomes in the university introductory physics courses. Tetyana is a member of CAP, OAPT and AAPT. Tetyana credits her interest in physics and her career choice to her high school teachers. Tetyana's web site can be found here.

Webmaster: Greg Macdonald

Greg Macdonald has taught Physics and Grade 9 and 10 Science for the past 16 years, first at St. Catharines Collegiate and more recently at Laura Secord Secondary School in St. Catharines, Ontario. In addition to attending the OAPT conference (almost) every year, Greg attended the Perimeter Institute EinsteinPlus conference in 2008 and is currently a member of the Ontario Teacher Associates network for Perimeter. Greg's other interests include astronomy, swimming and trying with limited success to convince his three daughters to become science geeks like Dad.

Contest Editor: Saara Naudts

Sara Naudts has been teaching physics in the Peel District School Board since 2004. She is passionate about learning: whether it is growing as teacher by implementing strategies based on PER (physics education research), learning new developments in science, or integrating technology in the classroom, watching her students be successful in physics is her goal. In her spare time she loves competing in triathlon, being the volunteer coordinator for the Canadian Cross Training Club (C3), and coaching. “Practice with emotion and purpose, perform with passion and confidence.”

Newsletter Manager: Sara Cormier

Sara Cormier has a B.Sc. in Honours Physics and a M.Sc. in Experimental Polymer Physics. In her current position as Outreach Coordinator for Physics and Astronomy at McMaster University she has been able to focus on promoting physics and physics education to students of all levels.
