My Experiments with Physics Education Research

How do you make the transition from a traditional chalk’n’talk classroom to a completely reformed learning environment based on Physics Education Research (PER)? Chris Meyer will guide you on a journey towards creating a Gr. 12 physics course based entirely around cooperative group work and research-based activities. Learn about a teaching world where the old-fashioned lecture is gone and students really wrestle with physics for a full 60 minutes a day. Chris will share the complete set of resources he has developed so that you may do this too!

Chris Meyer completed a Specialist Degree in Physics at the University of Toronto, but didn’t really get this physics stuff until he began teaching. From his experiences passing on physics knowledge at A. Y. Jackson (North York), the Ontario Science Centre, Rosedale Heights (Toronto) and now York Mills C. I. (North York) he came to realize that the teaching techniques he was raised with were not adequate. After attending a lecture by Edward Redish at the University of Toronto, and becoming acquainted for the first time with Physics Education Research, things began to change.
