Sara Cormier

Biophysics in the Classroom

In this workshop I will talk about a wide range of biophysical concepts ranging from organisms and their movement to DNA and osmosis. I will highlight the benefits of an interdisciplinary approach to science. Often times, analysing a system from a different point of view can yield important, new insights. For example, biophysicists look at biological systems in a quantitive way. I will present a few simple experiments that highlight the field of biophysics and that can easily be taken into the classroom. One such experiment will investigate how to measure the power output of a grasshopper.

Sara Cormier has a B.Sc. in Honours Physics and a M.Sc. in Experimental Polymer Physics. In her current position as Outreach Coordinator for Physics and Astronomy at McMaster University she has been able to focus on promoting physics and physics education to students of all levels.
