Interactive Lecture Demonstrations

Doug Hayhoe

This half-hour workshop will model Interactive Lecture Demonstrations, an effective way of teaching concepts to students in a non-lab setting. They involve one set of equipment and work well with medium or large classes. Their effectiveness is based on their carefully structured student prediction and interaction sequence before and after the demonstration. When implimented correctly, student conceptual gains are substantial. ILD modules have been completed for most dynamics topics and are being developed for sound, light, and electricity & magnetism. (Note: ILDs do not replace but rather complement hands-on programs such as RealTime Physics.)
