Ontario Association of Physics Teachers Annual Conference
May 22 - 24 2003

Thursday 22 May 2003
7:00 - 9:00 pm

Johann Beda and other members of OPETA

Johann is president and CEO (and everything else) of Physiciens sans Frontières , a physics consulting company specializing in physics education and curriculum design. His involvement with the Photonics Education and Training (PET) Project at Algonquin and Niagara colleges lead to early membership in the Ontario Photonics Education and Training Association. OPETA was founded in June of 2001 to serve the needs of Ontario's photonics education and training community, and is comprised of members from Ontario and around the world, drawn from pre and post secondary institutions, industry, and government. OPETA's vision is "To foster, through its members, the provision of world-class education and training for all photonics needs in Ontario"

Photonics - Optics and Lasers From Grade School to Grad School

What is photonics? Why might my students care? Where does photonics fit into the Grade 11 and 12 physics courses? What photonics instructional resources are available for the elementary and high school teacher? We will have demonstrations of equipment available for loan, and discussions of other resources for instructors to be followed by the opportunity to examine a number of lab setups by OPETA members such as the college PET Project to learn what (and how) students of OPETA members' programs are learning. Come see our lasers. Come play with some optical fibres. Bring all your optics and photonics questions and tips to share.
